As the course leader of Advances in Digital Marketing at Heriot-Watt University, I have arranged a series of guest speaker sessions with leading digital marketing practitioners in Dubai. Last week the students enrolled in this course and myself enjoyed a one-hour session with Kiera Doherty, Head of Digital at Weber Shandwick in the Middle East.

During this session, Kiera spoke about her experience in digital marketing and she gave the students some valuable advice on how to create great content for digital channels based on her many years of experience working in this field. The agency where Kiera works, Weber Shandwick,  manages the social media presence of Heriot-Watt University in Dubai, and students were able to hear how strategy is developed and aligned across the different locations in which our university is present. Also during her session the students were able to listen applied examples of things covered during the course, such as the importance of planning content, developing and executing a content calendar, as well as insights on some of the key metrics that are being used to assess the performance of social media activities for HWU’s presence.

We give all our guest speaker the official #digiSML mug.

Finally, Kiera also gave some advice to the students on what type of skills are needed to become a community manager, as well as some informal discussion of opportunities in this field. I also would like to take the opportunity to thank Kiera for sharing her experience with the students in our programme, and I hope that she will be able to join us for other events organised for our students at our campus.
